PAGE Six THE JEWISH TRANSCRIPT, SEATTLE Dorothy Thompson Heads Defense For Nazi-Killer PARIS (WNS)--A secret trial for Herschel Grynzspan, 17-year-old Pol- ish Jew, who shot and killed Ernst yam Rath, third secretary of the German embassy, was foreshadowed this week when tile Foreign Office published a decree authorizing ch)scd trials of court cases likely to have international repercussions. Meanwhile, Vincent de Moro- Giafferi, one of France's most famous criminal lawyers, accepted a request from the Journalists Defense Fuml in New York to defend Grynzspan. Organized by Dorothy Thompson in cooperation with a committee of .... noted writers, the fund has already ,received over $10,000 in cash con- tributions from non-Jews in all parts of the United States in response to an appeal to raise a defense fund for' Grynzspan. NEWSFACT: Paris refugee circles are whispering that the assassina- tion of the Germau embassy's third secretary by a Polish Jew has all the earmarks of a second Reichstag fire. Reasoning behind this startling the- ory is that Herschel Grynzpan, an unknown Polish Jewish youth, couhl not have gained admittance to the upper floor of the German emtmssy without some one being anxious to have him get there. That someone, it is argued, might have been a Jewish Nazi agent provocateur--and there are numbers of them in all refugee centers--who sold Grynzspan the idea of shooting van Rath. Van Rath was selected as the victim--so the theory goes--because, he was the nephew of the late Roland Koester, German envoy to Paris, who com- mitted suicide when he learned he was a non-Aryan. Nazi Killed In Paris Was Non-Aryan's Kin NEW YORK.--There's an ironic angle to the assassination of that Nazi dii)h)mat in Paris by A Polish Jewish youth, el)servers noted this week. The victim, Ernst van Rath. was a nephew of the late Roland Koest- er, former German ambassador to France, who committed suicide be- caused he discovered a non-Aryan skeleton perched on his family tree. $50,000,000 Is British-Czech Loan LONDON (WNS)--A $50,000,000 loan by the British government to Czechoslovakia to be "applied to meet immediate requirements, par- ticularly relief for refugees and pro- vision of employment for them" was officially announced here this week together with an arrangement pro- viding for the emigration to England, France, Finland and other countries of 650 Jewish and other anti-Nazi refugees from the Sudetenland. These refugees have all been black- listed by the Nazis and their return to the Suds[on has been demanded by Germany in formal demands on Czechoslovakia. England has agreed to admit 300 of them, and France will take 200. Another" 150 will be divided among other countries. Czechoslovakia Orders Refugee Aid Ceased PRAGUE (WNS)--Aeting on a warning by Czech military authori- ties that continued aid to refugees from Germany and Austria was an- tagonizing Germany, the Jewish Re- lief Committee, which h.s been as- sisting thousands of refugees, this week distributed its remaining funds and went out of business. Dissolution of the committee came as a tragic blow to the Austrian and Germ,m refugees. Girls 'Adopt'Youths NEW YORK.--Fearing that the adoption of the complete program of totalitarianism in Roumania will bring about intensified anti-Semitism in that country, Junior Hadassah, the Young Women's Zionist Organi- zation of America, announced this week that twenty-five Jewish child- ran of school age will be transferred from Roumania to Meier Shfeyah, a children's village in Palestine main- tained by the youth Zionist organi- zation. Junior Hadassah, this year spent $45,000 on the maintenance and en- largement of Meier Shfeyah, which since 1925 has graduated 400 boys and girls and found jobs for them. Send 10,000 Children To Palestine--Hadassah NEW YORK.--Hadassah, the Wo- men's Zionist Orgmfiz.fl>ion of Am- erica, and largest Zionist groul) in thc world, this week cabled a plea to tire British Government to send at least 10,000 refugee children to the IIoly Lan(l "that they might be rehabili- tated among their own people after months of ill-treatment and terror." H'dassah is sole Americau agency for the Youth Aliyah (immigration) movement which has transferred 4,000 Jewish children from Central Europe to Palestine for" four and a half years. IIadassah sent $1,250,000 to Palestine last year, of which $370,000 was for Youth Aliyah. Catholic Youth Group Boos German Delegate OTTAWA (WNS)--A delegate of Jewish origin attending the first Canadian Catholic Youth Congress this week received a tremendous ova- tion from the 15,000 l)eople present while a German delegate was greeted with hoots and cat-calls as the con- gress endorsed a statement that "Catholics do not approve of racial boundaries." Threat To Professor Ends In Jail NEW ORLEANS (WNS)--An at- tempt to boycott all "racial Jews" in New Orleans by an organizatiou calling itself the "League for the Res- toration of Aryan Supremacy in Am- erica" was disclosed this week with the arrest of Josclrh Hahn-Korff, an alien German who is secretary of the league, on a charge of scnding de- famatory matter through the mails. Hahn-Korff was arrested on the comphdnt of Dr. Alton Ochsner, Tu- lane University I)rofessor of medi- cine, who said he had received a post- card with the following warning from the German: "An effort is being made for the benefit of unsusl)ecting Gentiles to list all racial Jews in this territory. Your na]n as well as your character suggcsts according to testimony by a number of former associates of yours, that you tire either 100 per cent or partly Jcwish. "Should you fail to produce con- vincing evidence to the contrary within a reasonat)le tinm, you will be listed as described above. N.B. We ire m)t interested in your religious denonfination." Professor Ochsner, who is not a Jew, said he had discharged Hahn- Kofff, a biochemist, from he Charity Hospital chemistry laboratory seven years ago because "he was too Prus- siam" The postcard was turned over to the postal authorities who haled Hahn-Korff before U. Forty German Jewish refugees are already settled on the B'nai B'rith Colony in Palestine, and there will soon be ac- commodations for 100 families, it was announced this week. The colony was provided for when B'nai B'rith, two years ago, gave $100,000 to the Jewish National Fund for the purpose. The $100,000 gift, largest given by any organization at that time, came at the height of present riots in Pal- estine. The colony consists of 8,000 du- nams (2,000 acres) of land northeast of the ohain of Jewish settlements that exiiend via Ein Harod to the new Jewish points in the plain of Be|san, in the Jordan Valley. It is encompasued on all sides by Arab territory, and therefore has a stout stockade around it and a high watch tower with a powerful search- light. The B'nai B'rith Colony intends to develop into a moshav, i.e., a small-holders' village, where every family will have its own house and farm, although some of the crops raised may bc produced in common. Practically all of the settlers are from Germany. All of them are sons and daughters of German B'nM B'rith members Dry-farming is pursued by the colonists, who have to import their water until a boring on the colony itself is completed. They are equipped with tractors, comhines, arrd mechanical ph)ughs, as well as electricity, and are growing wheat, oats, and maize. "The very meution of B'nai B'rith is now forbidden in Germany," B'nai B'rith officials commented. "The name has beeu exiled with the Jews. "And like them, it has found one new home in a new Jewish outpost which links Emek Jezreel with Lower Galilee." HUNDREDS OF JEWS JAILED BUDA]'EST (WNS)--Scveral hun- dred Jews in Eastern Hungary have been rounded up by the police and sent to a concentration camp at Nagy Kanizsa, according to reports this week in tire pro-Nazi and anti- Semitic press.
