The four instructors who conduct courses and lectures at the Academy of Jewish Studies of the Temple De Hirsch are Dr. Arthur Lagawier, Mrs. Rachel Rachovitsky, Rabbi Ri- chard Rosenthal and Rabbi Alan Podet. Following is a thumbnail sketch of each: Dr. Lagawier was bern in Amsterdam, Holland in 1901 and has resided in Seattle since 1942. He studied at the universi- ties of Leyden and Amsterdam and has a Ph.D. in philosophy. He retired as a diamond importer in 1965 and since has been teaching Hebrew. In 1O lectures he will review the literature of the Talmud, the historical development of Tal- mud, the place of the Talmud in Judaism, and Social values in Talmudic Judaism. Mrs. Rachovitsky is a Sabra, having been born in Jerusalem. Her major schooling took place at Haifa, where she attended Teachers College. She also stud- ied for some time at Bezalel Art School in Jerusalem. She will teach a course in the Hebrew language. Rabbi Rosenthal has served as the rabbi of Temple Beth El in Tacoma since 1956. Prior to this service he was a chaplain in the U.S. Army in 1954-56. He was ordained as a rabbi in 1954. His course will be a survey of the contents of the Bible. He will discuss the different meth- ods of reading and understan- ding it- both traditional Jewish approaches and modern ones. Rabbi Podet is a native of Cleveland, Ohio and he spent his early years in Chicago. He received his A.B. degree from the University of Illinois in 1956. The Hebrew Union College -- Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati -- awarded him the graduate degree of Bachelor of Hebrews (Honors) in 1958. He pursued graduate work in 1959-60 at the Hebrew Universi- ty of Jerusalem. He now lectures in the Near East Department of the Univer- sity of Washington in Hebrew language and literature.
