To give an indication of the COnditions under whi the Jews of Persia llve, a story current among the Jewish population may be cited here. This story also purports to explain how the Marano group came into being. The Persians have days of na- tional mourning in which they mourn the loss of their prophets and leaders. Once, the story goes, on such a day a Jew fell sick, his hand covered with boils. The Jew consulted a Persian "doctor" who advised him to kill a dog and to stick his sick hand into the stom- ach of the slain animal and to keep it there for a time. The Jew asked the Persian to arrange this for him. The Persian "doctor" hated the Jews. He called together a crowd of his co-religionists and before their eyes slew the dog. Immedi- ately after that the Persian went before the highest court and de- nOUnced the Jews. He told the Judges that the Jews have on this holy day of mourning killed a dog because, with this action, the Jews wanted to show that the Saints we mourn are but dogs. But the Kadi, the Judge, was a friend of the Jews and he refused to believe that the Jews would do so irrational a tiling. In the meantime a mob gathered around his house and de- manded to be allowed to attack and kill all the Jews. The Kadi asked for time to investigate the thing himself. Naturally the body of the slain dog was found. The Kadi knew not how to explain it. The mob persisted in its demands for revenge and threatened to kill the I(adi if the latter would not sanc- tify their desire to slaughtqr all the Jews. The mob began to plunder. Thirty-seven Jews were killed in the very first minute. The Kadi, in order to save the Jewish com- raunity from complete annihilation, urged them to accept Islam. The Jews, facing certain death, chose . become Maranos -- outwardly oaammedans but Jews at heart. Per thirty years these Maranos ere compelled to observe Islam .a all its minutest details. A num- ber of families, after this long pe- riod of time, left their native town Went to dwell in Gerad, which -ln the province of Afganistan, Where they tore down the Moham- raedan mask they had worn. Many of the Maranos left for Turkestan, Only 200 or 300 miles from Meshed. uring the Bolshevik revolution, raany of them returned to Meshed, as Jews. Of late, because of the OSage in the government, their COndition has improved a little. These Maranos remained faithful Jewish rites are performed. All the Jewish holidays are strictly observed by the Maranos according to the regulations of the Jewish law. All know Schechita, and there are many cantors and Mohalim. In order to be able to ob- serve the Jewish religion ever clan- destinely, the Marshes have often to resort to presenting the local officials with "gifts." The Jewish leaders receive no compensation whatsoever for the performance of their religious offices as that of the Rabbi, Shochat, Mohel, etc. The preservation of the Jewish faith u mong the Maranos is to a great extent due to the faithful ob- servance .by the women of all the "Mizvoth." The Jewish women wear long wide dresses which cover their bodies from head to foot. Their faces are always hid- den under a black veil. The wo- men are never allowed to be in the company of men, even those of the Jewish faith. The girls are in- structed in the Jewish religion and many are well versed in the books of the Persian poets. The language employed by the Maranos at home as well as in their commercial life is Persian. A Persian translation of the Bible is found in each house. As soon as rumors of the Zionist movement reached them, they or- ganized several Hebrew schools. At the examinations of the children, as on other occasions, as that of the celebration of holidays, the women are present; they take part in the arrangements as well as in the singing of the Hatikvah. As to the life of the Jews in Per- sia, one can add little to what is already known. The economic and cultural position of the Jew is very low. The conference was called because of the representations of the govern- ments of the United States and Italy, who declined to recognize the Tan- giers, because of their objections to its status. And they remembcred his words."--Luke 24, 1-8 * * * * * * I have quoted at length the above passages both from tile Old and New Testaments for the benefit of those Jews who are not well acquainted with the Biblical passages upon which Christianity today bases itsfaith, its me, its ethical philosophy. I believe that every grown-up Jew ot read the New Testament as well as the Old-- though I dent agree with Landman of New York that Jewish children should be taught the New Test- ament in Temple Sunday Schools--we should know the New Testament if only to be able to refute its other-worldly ethics that goes hand in hand with its supernaturalism, that is, with its purely religions dogmas. Easter is the most purely Christian holiday, because the supernatural element--the resurrection--is its raison d'etre. In contradistinction to the Jewish Passover, which has a nationalistic, this-worldly meaningthe free- ing of a people from physical slavery--besides a religious significance, Eas- ter has a purely religious, because a purely other-worldly, connotation, at Christmas time it celebrates a birth, which may or may not have occurred by natural processes. But at Easter time it celebrates not a death, but a ressurrection, the climax in the life of a man whose attributes were not at all human, not at all earthly, a Man of Sorrowsas far as this world is con- cerned, a man who did not laugh with or at humanity, as mortal beings do, a man who could not be understood by men while he was alive because he was not really of their flesh and blood. Later on men dified him because he did represent to them one aspect of man's nature--the God-aspiring one, or rather perhaps the fear of looking at one's sordid self in the mirror. To the barbarous heathen of the Roman Empire who adopted Christianity, this Man of Sorrows who came with a message of salvation from heaven was welcomed as the bearer of comfort to people who were just emerging from a primitive,animal-like thoughtless existence, who were beginning to see the world withhuman eyes, who were afraid--and how afraidl--of what they saw, who could not control their own barborous instincts in the civilized Roman society that they wished to inherit and who were thus ready to embrace a religion that spurned reality. At Easter-time every year Christianity proves to itself and proves to others that you cannot separate the ethical teachings of its founder from the stories about his miraculous life. Rabbi Wise and other Jews who think that the ethical teachings can be thus separated, and some modernist Christian preach- ers who also think that way, should remember this. Who but one who is is conceived in the womb of a virgin by the Holy Ghost and becomes God's son, can teach humanity "if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out and cast it from thee; it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than hav- ing two eyes to be cast into hell fire," and the other teachings that go con- trary to earthly man's desire for life and self-preservation?
